ADVANCED CLINICAL NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE
By Leah Hechtman

ACNM review by Stephen Clarke - The Journal of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society
“Readers of JATMS are deeply aware of the transformative evolution that naturopathic practice is continuously undergoing. Its research base is expanding as more and more graduate and post-graduate courses are introduced in tertiary education. It is being embraced as a first contact therapeutic modality by ever-growing numbers of clients drawn to it by both its patient-centered creed and its clinical results. It is no longer limited to general practice, but its practitioner base has broadened and expanded into specialised practices. Increasingly modality-specific undergraduate and post-graduate courses have proliferated, with many clinicians with such qualifications intensifying their focus to key areas of expertise.
This meticulously compiled and prodigiously comprehensive textbook is the perfect partner to this process. It is hard to think of a similar project that approaches its range, depth and commitment to both the foundation principles of naturopathy and the contemporary requirement of evidence-based practice than this one. It champions both the discipline (“… Our system of healing is unique and relevant; our treatments efficacious and therapeutic; our methodology and outcomes logical and supportive ….”) and the scholarship that underpins its status in the therapeutic environment. As one of the contributors points out, in her chapter on Global Naturopathic Medicine, “Modern naturopathy combines the best of traditional medicine with contemporary science as a practice that is steeped in tradition while incorporating modern clinical advances. The manner in which the profession is recognised and regulated varies around the world; however, consistency in core beliefs as well as commitment to high standards in education, practice and codes of conduct bind the profession together as a system of medicine that makes a positive contribution to global health.” This book does ample justice to naturopathy’s role in contemporary health care.
The contributors are field leaders in Australian naturopathy: specialist clinicians and educators with outstanding professional expertise and experience. The first eleven chapters deal with a selection of key therapeutic domains, such as environmental medicine, chelation, detoxification, naturopathic hydrotherapy, the microbiome and mind-body medicine. The section on fertility adumbrates the organisation of the next section, tracing naturopathic approaches to the phases of life through conception to geriatric medicine. There are also chapters on pregnancy and labour, breastfeeding, infancy, and paediatrics and adolescence.
Then follow chapters on naturopathic approaches to some specific medical conditions: autism, Down Syndrome, cancer, HIV and Lyme Disease. While these appear to have been idiosyncratic choices reflecting the particular expertise of chosen authors, they nevertheless deal with important issues that many practitioners will encounter in their clinical careers, and they are treated in the same professional depth that the rest of the book presents. Perhaps a future edition – something to be eagerly looked forward to – will canvass a further range of conditions.
