The simplest and easiest strategy to assist with sinusitis is to use steam inhalation to contract the blood vessels of the nose and allow the spaces of the sinuses to open, which promotes drainage. When you add to inhalation the incorporation of essential oils such as tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender or peppermint, it assists by providing anti-bacterial properties and acts as a decongestant. Whilst standing over the bathroom sink with a towel over your head is probably the ideal, practical useable strategies may be a little easier. You can put a few drops of essential oils into a mug of hot water and then wrap your hand around your nose and mouth and cover the top of the mug as you breathe in. For small children I often recommend putting a few drops on the shower floor or in the bath and as the steam distils, the baby/child (or adult!) can inhale the aromas of the oils. Otherwise, using a vaporiser or humidifier can also be useful.

Generally, it is best to encourage lots of fresh fruits and vegetables – especially those rich in vitamin C and bioflavonoids such as citrus fruits, capsicum and kiwi fruit. It is also advisable to avoid mucous producing foods such as dairy products. Increase your intake of fluids in purified water, fresh fruit and vegetable juices, soups/broths and herbal teas. Supplements of Vitamin C and Zinc can stimulate the immune response to treat or prevent the sinus infection whilst Herbal Medicines of Garlic, Fenugreek and Horseradish can also be beneficial to dry up the mucous and relieve the pressure of the infection.
